caffeine makes me sleepy?!

I've long felt that caffeine had no effect on me. Thought that perhaps it was because I had too many sodas as a child or something. But over the past few months, I've noticed that a cup of coffee at work, rather than giving me a boost, makes me more drowsy (and I don't mean after any sort of sugar high). I didn't think much of it until last night.

I'd gone to Starbucks and gotten myself a Pumpkin Spice Latte (very good) whilst I tried to stay up with Kant. (he and I aren't getting along so well, but I'll keep trying) I got home and was reminded that Lexi had asked me to take her to the airport at 4 in the fast-approaching morning. She advised, "So don't stay up too late!" I was thinking, yeah sure, even if I don't get a boost, it's sure to keep me awake, right? It occurred to me shortly thereafter that it was about 10:30 and I was already getting very tired, having almost finished my drink.

So I did a search: "caffeine makes me sleepy" and read bits of a few of the different hits. This one I read all the way through: "Why Doesn't Caffeine Affect Me?" Just a forum discussion, but I was intrigued. It's not all in my head? It might actually make some people drowsy? Weird.

So I didn't stay up too late - I was too tired to. I woke up a good bit earlier than the 3:50 I'd set my alarm for, but I imagine that was because I was worried about not waking up on time. (a common occurrance for me) Then I had some errands to run (long story... but I'd rather stay up late and do them than have to wake up early to do them before work) and got home at 5:00. I had some difficulty falling asleep again, but I was able to get a few hours. Hardly what I would call a good "control" night for an experiment, but notable.

Can anybody relate to this? Should I be having a cup of coffee rather than wine before bed?

side note: I drank a cup of coffee black for the first time on Monday. It was definitely a new experience for me and bears looking into. (thanks go to the friend who offered it to me!) I likened it to eating 80% chocolate, which, if you've never tried it... be warned. It is not for the faint of heart. (Btw, it was about 7pm at the time. I didn't notice any lift or drag due to it, but it certainly had no negative effects on my attempts at sleep come 2am that morning.)

Hi, I'm a bit late to responding but I am one of the "Caffeine makes me sleepy" types as well. In fact, it led me to your blog. In the morning, I feel a desire for a cup of tea or a caffeinated soda which actually relaxes me (not wake me up). However, if I drink a second cup anywhere within an hour of the first I begin to feel a bit tired after 15 minutes of ingestion. Anymore drinks will make my thoughts fuzzy and unclear as well as put me out like a light though I feel anxious as well as completely exhausted just before entering sleep.

Going without it in the morning isn't much of an option either as the rest of the day I feel annoyed and mentally unfocused so I guess I'm stuck with a balancing act between the two? My sister, as well suffers from this problem. In fact, if she has problems sleeping, she'll often drink caffeinated drinks to get back to sleep.

BTW, you were the first person outside my family I've actually read to have this as well. I thought perhaps we were rare but after reading your link to the forum, I feel a bit less odd with this annoyance. :)

We must be a few individuals who can defeat the power of cafeine. I drink coffe to sleep.

It happens when I have had a long day, working or studying till 12:am. I make me a warm, strong and black cup. In no time I'll be in dreamland. I have not been to a doctor about it as I don't conseider it a problem. It makes me feel different.

I search google on more or less the same words, which lead me to this page. I didn't find the answer I had hoped for. Knowing the effects coffee brings us, the damn obvious thing is not to drink any of it if we wish to stay awake. Instead, a morning run and a cool shower will give us that boost, if not better. Many of us don’t have the time for exercise, when we should at least be doing it three times a week. I drink coffee because I enjoy it. After drinking it I get pretty drowsy, and the effect usually doesn’t wear off until after the nap/sleep I eventually make. We at least have this guys and gals. Not only does it taste good, but it’s the better choice to the sleeping peel. Well now, I’m a bit drowsy after this cup of coffee, and will be heading to bed now. YOU ARE NOT ALONE. Good night.

i searched "caffeine makes me sleepy" and it led me to your site. i guess i am not the only with the problem! i just had an energy drink and within minutes im yawning and ready for bed...coffee never works for me.

I feel so at home now! People always thought I was weird when i said that coffee puts me to sleep, but now I know that I'm not alone. Unfortunately I discovered this when I was in college and drank a HUGE cup of coffee to stay awake to study for exams. BIG mistake! I was sleeping in minutes! lol Well, I just finished a cup a few minutes ago and now I'm incredibly Mellow and my eyes are weighed down in total sleep mode. Gnight all!

Oh my gosh THANK YOU for posting this! Yes, caffeine puts me out like a light. All my life I thought there was something horribly wrong with me or something! I feel so much better now! Must be some strange anomaly or something...

I too found this page from searching "caffeine makes me sleepy". I was researching it because BOTH of my parents have this issue. The really odd part is that this only started happening to them in the past few years.

My dad is the caretaker of a local cemetery and he's told me stories about drinking coffee at work and then falling asleep at work. Said that he fell asleep "sitting on the gator (a little vehicle he drives around the cemetery) in the middle of the cemetery" or digging a grave, climbing down in there to finish squaring it off and falling a sleep down there.

They regularly drive from their home in Missouri to my Grandmother's in Ohio--on one trip before they realized what was happening, he kept popping No Doze to try and stay awake. NOT!

I also get sleepy when I drink something with caffeine in it. I was searching for causes when I found your blog. Glad to know that I'm not the only weird person out there... or should I say unique?

For me, it's soda. I don't like coffee because it makes my mouth/throat feel weird. My teacher said that I might be allergic to the caffeine in it but sodas are fine so I'm not quite sure.

Anyway, I'm going to bed now since I just drank some coke. XD Good night all!

I am yet another person who is made drowsy with caffeine. I have a theory as to why it happens, but no evidence -- I think it may be that caffeine does in fact turn my systems "up" for a second, but my body reacts strongly to counter that effect, going too far and ending up making me sleepy (in an attempt to avoid the "up"). I also get depressed in the spring when everybody else gets energized, and I think it may be the same thing going on there. Overcompensation to excessive stimulation.

wow your habits are so like mine. People call them bad habits but hey i get my stuff done. The whole reason i found your blog was because i did a search on "caffeine makes me sleepy" then i saw the whole rather stay awake then wake up thing...weird

Saw this on yahoo answers. Seems like dehydration plays a part.

I am glad that you asked this question.

First, caffeine is a vasoconstictor (it shrinks your blood vessels) thereby, it increases your heart rate and blood pressure. This is why caffeine is so effective for treating headaches.

Second, caffeine is also a diuretic (it makes you pee).

Therefore, if you are already dehydrated, then the caffeine will not have enough blood volume to shrink down the vessels to increase your blood pressure, and the caffeine will increase your dehydration to make you more tired.

Tip: this is what I do. Drink at least 3 to 4- 8 ounce glasses of water before drinking one cup of coffee. You will run to the bathroom in 20 minutes, but you see that you will have more pep and energy and use the 3 to 4 rule with every cup. You will find that you need less coffee to give you more energy

Sorry. Author unknown

I have the same issue and, like many here, found this page by googling "caffeine makes me sleepy."
I also read that person's Yahoo comment about vasoconstriction and dehydration - it all made sense up to the "you get dehydrated and therefore sleepy" part. I certainly don't agree with the "therefore" logic - minor, or even severe, dehydration doesn't cause the total heavy-eyelids, nod-off sleepiness that I get after drinking coffee. Dehydration might make you less energetic and lethargic, but it won't knock you out.

It'll take some more research, but there appears to be some correlation between ADD/ADHD and experiencing reverse effects of "uppers" - Ritalin, for ex., is actually an upper. I don't know much about the physiology of ADD, and these correlations are just supposed (caffeine is not = ritalin), but I'd take a wild guess that it all has something to do with seretonin uptake in the brain.

Good luck researching, everyone! I, for one, won't be going to bed right after writing this =)

Oh, I really though I was the only one. I googled "caffeine makes me sleepy" and stumbled upon your site.

Personally, I can drink an entire Monster energy drink and half way done I am already very sleepy. Coffee never worked for me, if anything it has the exact opposite effect. Coke just makes me anxious, shake a lot, and sick to my stomach so I tend to stay away from it.

I'm not sure why, but I have read that caffeine relaxes people with ADHD, but I don't have that so I'm not sure about it.

This started not even a week ago, when I drink caffeine I also get tired. I even drink a cup of diet soda and i'm tired so I don't touch it as often.

This only started when I started working out and losing weight.

I just had the same problem, but I can tell you that it is not your caffeine receptors built up from childhood. I a 14 and I did not drink caffeine commonly at all until the age of 13. Caffeine makes me drowsy, i have been experimenting with coke which contains 40 mg of caffeine. i experienced no effects after drinking 160 mg of caffeine; 1 red bull and 2 diet cokes. It takes 300 mg to cause "caffeine intoxication" I slept just fine that night. I love and hate this bodily problem, i cannot get a wake me up, but i can sleep after a coke. I will be experimenting with new liquids, and will be trying to achieve a "caffeine high" later in the year to determine if caffeine makes me sleepy.

I have this same problem. I never remember being wired at the end of the night because of something I ate or drank that day. I am sitting at my desk now infact at 320 in the afternoon, sleepy after drinking a cup of dark roast coffee. I merely drink it for the taste, because I know it has no other affects on me. I have been noticing for the past month or so that I have actually become tired after drinking coffee. This has become very annoying.

Anonymous said...

Hi, just searched the same words and funny enough stumbled upon your blog. I have the exact same problem, try to drink a cup of coffee in the morning at work to try and keep the eyes open, but an hour or so later I can feel myself drowsy eyed! quite an annoyance during the day.

I also found out that if I drink a cup of coffee, I'd feel real hungry at about the hour mark which could also contribute to the sleepiness, not sure if it is the caffeine or what not.

I kinda agree with the dehydration part since I always feel thirsty after a cup of coffee, should try the drink water before the cup of coffee thing...

anyways, also glad to see I'm not the only one in this boat!

Anonymous said...

Hi,

I've actually had this problem a lot, and I think I can help! I am a med student and we actually went over this problem recently in class! As was stated in a previous response to this post, it IS due to dehydration. The Yahoo response post was accurate. Dehydration causes you to be drowsy because your body is trying to protect itself from loosing more fluids and energy. In trying to do this, oxygen supply to the tissues such as muscles drops, and with less oxygen you feel more tired. You might not always feel drowsy when dehydrated, but caffeine will greatly magnify this effect.

If this happens to you, just try drinking a couple of cups of water, it should help!

learning beautiful said...

that's incredible! thanks so much for the "educated input." :D

Gremlin said...

I can directly refute the dehydration claim. I have been trying ( since reading that post on yahoo answers ) to offset every cup of coffee or energy drink with at least 32 oz of water.

Doesn't help or change the effect of caffeine at all. I am still *immediately* drowsy after 1 cup of coffee.

I have always had this affect from caffeine, even as a teenager. I did however find that consuming more than 400mg of caffeine ( 2 good NOS drinks ~ 285mg each ) and the stimulant effect does happen.

I too tried drinking water before a cup of coffee and that didn't help. :(

Wow. I am so glad others feel this way! Whenever I mention to others that I can drink a cup of coffee and go right to bed, they look at me like I'm just trying to act all special and mysterious.

Based on my moms 'no soda' policy, living in the country and not having a lot of spending cash - I didn't drink a lot of soda as a kid.

In college I would drink coffee to stay up, but like others have said - instead it would put me right to sleep. I worked at a coffee shop so had many years to test out my theory! I love coffee, but it does nothing for me.

I just did a web search on this topic because I had a red bull a few hours ago, and before I had even finished it I felt like I just really, really needed to go lay down for a little bit. I was asleep for over an hour before my son was banging on the door, home from school. This has happened the past few times I've had red bull - extreme exhaustion - totally drooling when I was asleep, dreaming that I was awake...I mean, I was crashed - so no more for me. (the only reason they're in the house is my husband bought them for red bulls/vodka) I run half-marathons and this 'after caffeine' feeling is worse than the 'after half-marathon' feeling.

I've tried the energy drinks before running and I am better off without them.

I'm jealous of my friends who say, "I was dragging, so I got a latte at Starbucks and then I cleaned the house in no time!" I was beginning to think that they were secretly taking drugs - but I guess the caffeine DOES work for them.
I still drink my coffee every morning because I like the taste, but if I dont have any, I dont feel withdrawal type symptoms. I'm also 40, and I have a high tolerance for any pain meds (meaning, I need a lot more to not feel the drill going into my tooth, that sort of thing.)

Surely some scientist could get a grant to study this. We could all be subjects. I have questions for you all.
How does alcohol affect you? Are you normally a night or morning person? Age? Drug tolerance (like tylenol, novacaine, etc)?

seth said...

I am 14.
I do not drink alcohol.
i think better at night.
Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen Work just fine for me.(never had Novocaine)

learning beautiful said...

I'm 26. Alcohol has a mildly sedative effect on me, and wine especially sometimes helps me sleep. I can get up and be pleasant at most hours of the morning, though according to some things I've written in the early hours, my inhibitors aren't quite functional when I've just woken up. I do pretty well staying up late, too; bed time is usually after midnight and sometimes 3 or 4am. I'm not sure what they used to knock me out when I had my wisdom teeth removed, but I was out cold. If I'm in a lot of pain, I have to take a large number of Ibuprofen (I start with 6) to get any effect, but I only take pain meds a few days a month - if it's just mild to moderate pain I wait it out.

Anonymous said...

I so get this, a cup of coffee in the morning knocks me out and i have to have a little nap, but if I have an energy drink like a V or redbull i am completely wired.

It is only specifically with coffee that i get tired. maybe this is because energy drinks hydrate as well as dose you with caffiene so it counters the dehydration of a cup of coffee? hmm...think i'll go get a glass of water.

Unknown said...

Caffeine used to get me wired like most people but, since I started taking metoprolol, a beta-blocker, it just has the exact opposite effect: makes me quite sleepy. This also might be because right around the time I was prescribed the beta-blocker, I stopped taking Wellbutrin that I had been on for a couple of years.

I never got the concept of drinking coffee to stay awake and alert, rather it made me drowsy. I have one friend like me too.

Right now I am drinking some hard coffee and am already feeling drowsy, so I decided to search if this is something that happens to others to. Google: "coffee makes me drowsy", yours is the first result.

And the dehydration theory is totally wrong - how can you be dehydrated everytime you have coffee? How come I have NEVER experienced the cofee induced state of alertness ever in my life? Was I dehydrated ALL the time? I am a water freak actually, I drink a LOT of water. Even right now I have a bottle of water with me, and I am drinking it, cos the coffee was a little too strong.

I rather suspect, we lack/have something extra in our genes. We are mutants! Haha.

Extra info: I am male, 27, and a night person.

I too used the same search words as others. I too get very sleepy when I have caffeine - especially coffee. I tried an energy drink and was asleep within 15 minutes. I drink tons of water - usually more than a gallon a day.

I do think I am different - it is not a dehydration thing. I also was given Valium once and I ended up getting extremely hyper - bouncing off the walls - the opposite effect of what the doctor wanted to have happen.

I have a daughter who is ADHD and she definitely calms down with a stimulant. Once while on a vacation - she was out of her stimulant - we tried an energy drink - although she did not get sleepy - she did calm down quite a bit.

If I have coffee at work - I can pretty much tell that I will be asleep - if I am not doing something active. (I try to avoid coffee at work because of this - I just like the taste).

I think this would be an interesting study for some medical researchers.

This post is exactly what I experience. It's like if I drink a few cups of average to weak coffee I feel lvl. But if I would drink really strong coffee it's like someone slipped me a mickey. I feel super drowsey and my eyelids are super heavy. Then after a few hours it wears off and I don't feel drowsy anymore. But like one cup of tea after work and I feel "just right". I was add as a kid and had to take ridalin. I don't drink booze anymore because alcoholism is very prevalint In my family and I was definatly slipping into it.

I have the same case and just like most people, googled the thread though didn't find any actual answer to the question of why. Unlike most other google hits this thread seems to have some actually useful information and thus my post. If anyone knows/finds a real cause (most likely partial) please post it.

Both coffee and energy drinks make me very sleepy pretty fast. I barely drink coffee and when I do it's either because I like the taste or I'm trying to go to sleep early. I don't recall coffee ever stimulating me outside of the "tastes good" effect and never had anything that could be even remotely considered an addiction.
Always wondered what's so stimulating about it as at best it just wouldn't affect me. Most people I told about it just said I'm talking nonsense or trying to pretend being special (though I have a friend with the same case).

I'm quite sure I have ADHD though I never actually bothered to have it diagnosed.

I can also attest to it not being due to dehydration as I drink plenty of fluids (even slight overhydration maybe) and it happens regardless of how much or what I drank before the coffee.

And just as some other people here I feel I'm quite resistant to the effects of common pain killers.

Statistical info: Male, 23, night person, painkiller resistant, probably ADHD

What an interesting blog! I typed "caffeine sleepy" in Google and this was the first hit.

I'm having a hard time getting to sleep tonight, and was trying to figure out if anything I ate earlier today might be to blame. Then I thought about the fact that caffeine usually puts me to sleep, and wondered if there was any research to explain why.

The only other drug I can think of that I react inversely to most people is Zyrtec. It's supposed to be a non-sedating antihistamine, but if I take it, I am completely knocked out (fall asleep within an hour, usually, unless I'm very awake) the first day, and am dragging all the next day. It takes me two full nights to feel recovered from a single dose!

Guess I'll go drink some caffeine so I don't stay up much later...

I posted the last message and failed to add the following:

Male, age 40. I exercise quite a bit, so I drink a fair amount of water, although my wife thinks I don't drink enough. So I might fall in the dehydration camp.

I didn't drink many caffeinated drinks as a child (I was mainly a Sprite drinker), and gave them up completely for several years, starting in high school.

I, too, found this blog by googling "caffein makes me sleepy". I'm impressed.

Ditto on the Zyrtec... I seem to have the same relationship with coffee (the stronger the coffee, the sleepier I get), and Zyrtec knocks me out. Claritin, not so much, and Allegra not at all, but I can hardly keep my eyes open after taking Zyrtec.

i have the same problem! only with me, i never know what to expect. sometimes caffeine will get me really wired, give me jitters and i won't be able to sit still.. other times i'll go right to sleep. so it sucks every time i grab an energy drink to stay awake, i either will stay awake or i'll end up passing out a half hour later, regardless of where i am or what i'm doing, because i simply cannot stay awake. today for example, i had a HUGE monster energy drink (32 oz) and some "Jitterbeans", which are highly caffeinated chocolate covered espresso beans. an hour later i got home and dragged myself into bed. but i remember one time going to a narcotics annonymous meeting with my friend (as a support, not as a user) and had one cup of coffee at around five o'clock and didnt fall asleep all night or the next day (NA meetings are notorious for having extremely caffeinated coffee, for people who are getting off drugs but still want a "rush"). i was WIRED for far longer than i should have been, and i didnt even crash. i have also taken upwards of six or seven caffeine pills so i could stay up all day and i ended up falling asleep before i left the house to go do what i needed the energy for in the first place. i dont see a difference with coffee or energy drinks though, like one putting me to sleep whilst the other one keeps me up.

i do sometimes forget to drink, and i become severely dehydrated, and i have yet to test that theory, and it does make sense. i also haven't eaten anything today, and it's 1030 pm. i was thinking that maybe the caffeine has to have something to work with in me, like some food to help my body process it better or something. i don't know. i haven't found a definitive answer on this, and i think it'd be nice to know what's going on with my body, have an actual answer from a real doctor/scientist.

people think i'm nuts when i tell them caffiene makes me sleepy! glad i'm not the only one out there who is affected this way.
i don't have ADHD. i'm quite calm and easy going. i do have focusing problems, but that's more than likely due to other things, like what i smoke, lol. anyway.
i tried energy drinks, and can't stay awake when i do. if i skip my normal caffinated drinks during the day, i can't sleep at night. i drink caffiene regularly, because if i don't, i get horrible withdrawl headaches.
a cup of coffee makes me sleepy, not so much a regular soda.
also, like another poster on here, i have a high tolerance to pain meds, among other things like alcohol and regular medicines, and cold medicine, etc. things either don't work, or work weirdly, or i have to take so much that my family worries i'll end up overdosing on something.
i wish i could figure out what's wrong. google isn't much help. it's led me here and shown me i'm not alone, but i'd like to know what's going on so if i ever need surgary again, i can let my nurses know exactly why their pain meds aren't working!

Like most other people here, I found this blog while googling that coffee or caffeine makes me sleepy.

It's nice that I'm not alone. ;) The people around me probably think I'm trying to stand out - but I'm not. It's a little awkward.

I've never in my life had the rush, or the "up" before the "down". I just get drowsy. I often drink coffee before bed, and I fall asleep quite easily afterwards.

At first I thought that it had to have something to do with dehydration, but over the past few months I've made a habit of drinking water while drinking coffee... Makes no difference for me.

I don't really remember ever experiencing the "normal effect" after drinking any energy drink at all. When I was younger I'd often pretend because all my friends went all hyperactive, but I didn't actually get the effect.

Now I'm a student at the university and it would REALLY help if there was something out there that kept me awake when studying into the late hours. But no. No such luck.

At least we're not alone, people. ;)

Hello! I had been so tired and I needed a boost of energy to study and do my uni work.
SO, I had the bad idea of having 4 cups of very strong coffee and I was like a zombie for 2 days.
My heart raced and was shaky and with cramps in the legs. I never have cramps.
It made me even more sleepy and drowsy
I am not used to coffee, I never had tried coffee for studying or anything. Maybe that's why it was so bad???
I'm off to sleep now XD

Hey all :) I'm 20 and I have the same issue with caffeine, it's makes me sleepy . However , All my life i was drinking caffeine , I loved it . i use to drink big bottles of Coca cola or Pepsi at night and i felt great, i use to drink big cups of coffee each and every day and i was always energized. but it was one year ago. Today if i drink "ANY" drink which is containing caffeine im getting tired and relaxed. this kind of effect started when i was 19 years old . One day i bought my favorite big cup of coffee and drink it and i felt that my hart was bitting way fast than i anticipated. For a month i continued to drink coffee but with lass amount . well the effect was the same i felt weird Heartbeat . After two month i compliantly quited the coffee. I felt vary bad without it . So one day i tried to drink again . well nothing happen for the first three or four hours. however when i went home from collage I felt vary bad i could not breath (Or i thought i could not breath) My friend took me to the hospital with severe seizures . i felt i was dying . In hospital the doctors checked me with everything and they found nothing they sad that I'm in Perfect shape . every analysis were better then normal. And they diagnosed me with a panic attack . And after this day i could not drink coffee at "all" . I tried couple times ,results was bad. i felt dizzy and i was loosing control and i had a felling that i was passing out. this happened like almost a year ago . but for today like 7-8 days ago i tried for a first time in year to drink caffeine and it has no bad affect , however it does not give me any energy it's only makes me sleepy and tired . but its better than it was six month ago when it had vary bad effect. And i did many experiments on my self about this question : Why I cant drink coffee and feel energized? . and this question lead me to the "Nervous system" I think this is a problem . I tried drinking water and not eat salty food but nothing helps. If anyone has the same problem ( im calling it a problem because for me it is a problem , i cant boost my energy any more with anything) i think that the only thing we can do it is to make body comfortable and do not force it to the food or drinks it does not like. and the time will do the rest .

Sorry for my English :)

I actually told my doctor this very thing. He said some people just respond differently. If I am having trouble falling asleep at night I get up and have a nice hot cup coffee and I will be asleep in no time. To avoid this when I have things to do, I drink decaf coffee because I just LOVE coffee, Or I will drink a cup of hot decaf tea, lemon grass or dandelion are my favorites. Long story short, if coffee makes you tired, don't drink it. Switch to decaf. You get used to it soon enough.

I am 16. Alcohol has close to no effect on me, the first time I drank I had 6 shots of scotch and wasn't buzzed. I am a night person; but I also have had issues with insomnia, I took Lunesta for a while, but it made me stay awake more. I have a very high tolerance for pain and pain medication. Ibuprofen works for headaches, but I have to double the dose for it to work. Aleve and tylenol do nothing for me. Codine and novocaine have no effect on me.
I also disagree with the dehydration claim, I always drink two drinks (one water and one coffee, tea, soda, or energy drink) and always drink more than the recommended 8 glasses of water a day.
Caffeine has always had this effect on me. Recently my family has been dealing with high-stress situations, and I was statying in a hotel room for a couple of weeks and had to "self medicate" with a red bull before attempting to sleep.

People with ADHD become sleepy when taking stimulants, its a classic symptom and sort of separates the true ADHD sufferer from the folks who simply need some behavior modification and are misdiagnosed as ADHD. I am not saying you have ADHD, but you should mention to your doctor that stimulants make you sleepy.

Wow, great to see this blog! I am a 47-year old female, very healthy, I work out regularly - love my spin class - and drink tons of water. I have never experienced the classic caffeine "buzz", and like several of you, I played along with family and friends to fit in. However, it never made me super sleepy until a few years ago. I suspected peri-menopause, but my brother-in-law mentioned something recently about not being affected by caffeine, and getting sleepy as well. I always drink my Peets coffee black. I burnt out on lattes and mochas in the 90s, plus all the dairy was making me bloated. These days, M-F, I have a small cup before work, then a huge steel, 24 oz coffee mug full of Peets at my desk. I am here at work now, literally falling asleep as I type this. Coincidenatlly, we recently have come to terms w/the fact that ADD runs in our family, although not severely. The two key ADD family members also have suffered from severe migraines, especially one, who continues to take heavy duty pharmaceuticals, and whose docs are always on call for the megashot at the emergency room one or two times a month. I myself have low-grade migraines which until recently, have been easily taken care of with Excedrine Migraine, but again I suspect perimenopause because they always happen with my periods, and now with much more pain that requires doubling or tripling the Excedrine. I defintely feel hormones play a huge role in how we are affected by drugs like caffeine. I like the idea of trying decaf to stay awake in the mornings. If that doesn't work, I might just stop altogether - it wouldn't be so bad, Peets is expensive! Thanks everyone...good luck!

I too am a sleeffeer. (Coffee drinking fall asleeper)
I love the taste of coffee, can eat a hand full of beans w/out feeling a thing. I wake up& usually have 8 to 12 shots of espresso before work. I feel absolutely no buzz...ever. I have drank regular coffee since age 12 and even back then I never got that extra umph people talk about.

I've always been active, stay hydrated, eat very healthy (except for the carnitas), have VERY high tolerance for pain killers so I usually don't use them when prescribed (had 3kids w/not even a tylenol,) but the kicker for me is that I can do one shot of tequila& I'll clean my house top to bottom.

I don't really care for drinking alcohol, but I will do a shot about twice a month for the sole purp of cleaning. I have talked to my doctor, who is great and he said...of course he did...Everyone is wired differently. That if you are a "two doped person" which I kinda am...i'm a get it done fast and accurate or stop and smell the roses cuz the world is not gonna stop if it's not done gal...that stimulants and relaxers can actuall" Reset" your bodies clock and thus night and day are backwards for your brain.

I've had this problem for decades now and so far I have come to beelieve what my doc said. I Never EVER drink and drive but do do a single drink if we're going out for an event or family trip. As for my coffee adiction...which I admit that I have...I drink it morning, afternoon when availabe and before bed. As long as I'm already doing something when I'm drinking it then it didn't shut me down. I can also drink it anytime after an hour after having an alcohlic drink and feel totally normal.

I do believe that there is a hood chance that people that have these characteristics may have a different genetic coding and as one of the previous bloggers identified, that some blockers and/or chemiical levels are different for us. If there ever is a grant/study, you all would have to club me to be the 1st to voluntteer. That is unless i've just had 4 shots and I'm sound asleep.

Male - 39 years old - Suspect I'd be classified as ADHD-PI (ADD without hyperactivity).

I discovered this site because I am investigating if stimulants might help me manage my inattentiveness. Well... actually... if I'm honest with myself I was distracted :-) When I noticed that most of the legal (non-prescription) stimulants contained caffeine I thought I'd google to find out why caffeine makes me tired.

I discovered caffeine makes me sleepy 20ish years ago. A classmate offered me some NODOZE and during the 15 minute break I unintentionally fell asleep on a concrete table. I slept for about an hour.
I've never experienced any energy from caffeine although recently I have noticed it can make me less focused / more easily distracted.
In small doses Caffeine doesn't make me drowsy but it does give me reflux so I avoid it.

I haven't had Zyrtec - but pseudoephedrine (which is in Zyrtec-D) makes me sleepy (also a bit thick, and weird feeling). Pseudoephedrine works as a stimulant for other people.

I've also had trouble with pain meds - sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. One time I had to swallow a gastric camera and the intravenous painkillers didn't work at all - it was an awful experience (imagine swallowing a garden hose). There was also the time the doctor pulled out my toe nail... but nobody wants to hear about that.

... and one more thing... what is a sugar high?

Anonymous said...

Wow. This is the first time I've looked this up. I kept wondering about and wondering about it. Coffee definitely makes me sleepy. Pretty much instantly after drinking it. I'm still experimenting. I'm not sure about black coffee. I might do better with that, but I'm not sure. I thought maybe it was the combination of coffee, cream, and sugar, but I'm not sure. I'm also experimenting with black tea. I get different results. Today I had a cup of black tea that made me extremely sleepy for about an hour. I think maybe it had a higher caffeine level than some of them. Red bull and 5-hour energy do not make me sleepy and they do seem to make me more alert. I'm thinking it's the B-vitamins and other things in it. However I have a really bad reaction to Amp. I have an inability to focus, memory lapses, get confused when i need to suddenly switch my train of thought or multi-task, and I start making mistakes that I do not make under normal circumstances. I also think I am hypoglycemic because if I don't eat large amounts of protein and other heavy foods such as multi-grain breads, etc, I get faint, light-headed, and dizzy when putting out energy. I'm still trying to figure out all these symptoms and what they all mean. I don't have health insurance and I'm low-income so I haven't been able to visit a doctor about these issues yet, although I hope to soon.

Anonymous said...

Continuation from above. I'm interested in the two ideas that were mentioned earlier about caffeine triggering hypoglycemia and about the body overreacting to the caffeine and trying to counterract the stimulant and so getting sleepy instead.

Oh my god. Itsa a relief to find that caffenated drinks have this effect of other people than me. Coffee does absolutely nothing for me in the way of going to sleep. Energy drinks are even worse! After drinking my first sip im out like a light. Once i had 3 cups of coffee with 18 tbsp of sugar trying to stay awake. I went right to bed. Like one other poster, alcohol has little to no effect either. It upsets my stomach somewhere around the 6th drink but i never really get drunk, im still really lucid. I am the farthest thing from a morning person you'll ever find, and im 19. Sleeping pills keep me awake. Ive tried several different kinds. Also, advil works ok but i have to take a minimum of 5 for even a headache. Tylenol and aleve have no effect no matter how much i take. Caffenated drinks also give me headaches as opposed to relieving one.

Caffeine in any form konks me out. As I type I am almost nodding off at 3:30 pm after drinking a cold energy drink. Coffee does the same thing and any sort of energy supplement. Dehydration isn't the key with me because I drink so much water every day I feel like a fish. I don't drink sodas ever except for the occasional energy drink which never works. I only rarely drink unsweet tea but I do have coffee on some days.

My main beverage of choice is plain old water. I drink at least 2 liters minimum of water per day (usually more like 3 liters) and have never had a problem with dehydration. Plus my reaction to caffeine in any form is consistent and quick. It doesn't take long after ingesting caffeine before I am dozing off.

I'm not low on iron and my doctor has never found a reason for it. Super irritating though when i need to stay awake. Nothing seems to perk me up! And I am getting plenty of sleep at night! I have no idea why I have this reaction. Oh, and alcohol konks me out too. Potatoes make me sleep, pasta makes me sleepy, meat makes me sleepy, EVERYTHING makes me sleepy....soo annoying.

I feel like I sleep walk through my entire life and would love to find something that would help me feel awake.

As the others have said, my search went to your post.

Male, 27 years old
I'm a day person
I have some focus problems but they are not ADHD related; I have autism in my family

Usually, a cup of tea goes just fine (I don't feel much buzz, never have), but a normal cup of drip coffee makes me sleepy. Now we got these capsule types and they are even "worse". I used to think it was a coffee vs tea problem, but since tea have less caffeine it seems more like the more caffeine, the more sleepiness.

Paracetamol and ibuprofen doesn't really affect me (never thought about it until now; people talk about how combining them makes them really work but not on me). Sea sickness pills, however, knocks me out!

I also have a high tolerance for alcohol. And interestingly enough, drinking coffee after alcohol has, as some others reported, a "sobering" effect; I get more lucid and awake.

i, too, have very recently started having problems with caffeine.

i am aaalmost 21, and for the past ten years caffeine would always do the trick: sodas, coffee, energy drinks, you name it. in my first two years of college i relied on coffee with no problem.

in the past six months i have begun to experience the drowsiness problem. i quit coffee a month and a half ago (and have felt better since), after which i moved onto black tea. for a while it had the same effect, which makes sense - it has about 1/3 the amount. i figured this would be my 'new coffee' for when i needed a boost. but, the same thing is happening - now a bag of black tea is enough to make me nap. (i just did!)

i drink 8 cups of water a day or more and pee like a racehorse, so i am nearly certain it is not dehydration.

i did start taking an anti-epileptic medication about six months ago, and i suspect that there is an interplay. anyone else have that possibility? next time i see my doc i will bring this up.

Anonymous said...

Wow had no idea caffeine had this affect on anyone else, much less this many people.

Caffeine did not always have this effect on me. As far as i know, it's only been this way for the past 5 years or so. These days, caffeine produces the other expected effects like raise my heart rate, make me pee, give me stomach aches if I have too much, etc. But mentally, the more I have, the harder and faster I'll crash. Weird.

By the way, I'm a caffeinated diet soda drinker (or used to be) who rarely drinks coffee, but coffee produces the same effect. :(

One more thing: I do have ADHDish symptoms at times ranging from mild to wild. But I certainly don't have ADHD, and am quite capable of geekishly sustained focus, especially in things I am interested in.

So this is all very interesting that everyone else seems to have the same problems as me with regard coffee and energy drinks, but other that one semi-qualified post made by a med student it all seems to be guessing games as to why this happens, has anyone acutally asked their doctor?? This has recently started effecting me and I am interested to know why its happening and what may have caused it... Personally I dont really see it as a problem, once I have identified that it has this effect on me I have just adjust my lifestyle to suit it(as in not drink coffee if I plan on staying awake)...

Have you considered the possibility that you might have narcolepsy or sleep apnea? Either of those would cause persistent daytime sleepiness. Carbohydrates in potatoes & pasta can also make you sleepy.

Anonymous said...

Wow, great post and comments.

I am 21, female, a med student and have had this problem for the last 7-8 years or so.
It does seem to depend on the amount of caffeine. When I was at school, (say 14-16) I used to drink lots of diet coke or several cups of coffee, which would help me concentrate if not make me any more awake. But 3 cups of coffee would be enough to get me feeling jittery and out of focus and fighting sleep. Coke did not do the same thing.

I then gave up both diet coke and coffee for 3 years. Diet coke for the aspartame; this made my migraines go away for a full year. Coffee; I cut down on drastically during this time, but I was still consuming caffeine in other ways. Normal coke for example - doesn't make me sleepy.

During my time at uni, I have discovered that alcohol generally has a stimulant effect (except say a solitary glass of wine). If the alcohol is followed with red bull then I'll find it really difficult to go to sleep and wake up within an hour or so anyway. Energy drinks alone make me feel sick and sleepy. Energy drinks with alcohol are the only times I wake up feeling nauseous or with any semblance of a hangover. Normally, I don't get hangovers regardless of how much I drink.

I remember I once tired pro-plus ( a caffeine tablet) whilst trying to stay up to finish some work. When I took it I'd been wide awake, but I basically passed out within 20-30mins.

I've always been intolerant to paracetamol. Fairly intolerant to Codeine. Ibuprofen still works depending on the dose.

I'm really interested by the ADHD links.

So, I've been doing research on this dilemma for a while, as it is far more common than people seem to realize. First of all, this has NOTHING to do with dehydration, and everything to do with the adrenal glands, specifically the adrenal medulla which secretes epinephrine and norepinephrine. These chemicals are essential for energy maintenance, focus / concentration, and mental / physical performance. As the adrenals are stressed by chronic use of stimulants (i.e. caffeine) and long-term stress, they become unable to produce and secrete these substances in sufficient quantities to facilitate proper functioning of the mind and body. The remedy for this is to STOP using stimulants, increase your intake of vitamin C dramatically (until bowel tolerance), get a lot of extra sleep (more than 8 hours), and add adaptogenic substances such as american ginseng, cordyceps sinsensis, and/or astragalus membranoceous to your diet. Avoiding stress as much as possible is also extremely important. I hope this helps. P.S.- in case it is relevant, I am a medical student completing my last term before residency as well as a licensed Acupuncture Physician.

Very interesting, and I felt as though I should throw my two cents in.

First, the stats... 25, female, night person, diagnosed ADD and currently prescribed 20mg adderall, and alcohol is a definite stimulant for me. In fact, when I drink alcohol the night before I can perfectly function off of 4-5 hours sleep and wake up feeling great. Additionally, I suffered from insomnia before being diagnosed as ADD and put on the medication for it. After that, falling asleep at night has never been a problem.

As an avid coffee/energy drinker I was okay with them for a while and never had too much of a problem with it. Looking back though, I can now remember being pre-drinking age and hanging out with friends at an all-night diner and drink 10+ cups of coffee. I certainly would have to use the bathroom quite frequently, but I would then drive home and fall right asleep. Within the past year though, it seems as though small doses of caffeine will absolutely knock me out. However, larger doses will give me the "perk up" effect. I'll drink anywhere from 1-2 20oz sugar free red bulls and a 4-shot-espresso mocha and that will definitely get me going, but not anywhere near a high or anything like that.

While I'm no medical professional by any means, I do know that at one point I had a cortisol test (a hormone, I believe) come back incredibly low. At one point my doctor was considering the possibility of Addison's Disease, one of the symptoms being that a person gets sleepy after drinking caffeine, though my diagnosis changed to something unrelated. While I don't suspect that the majority of us have Addison's, perhaps there's a link between cortisol levels and a tolerance/reaction to caffeine? Maybe someone with a bit more knowledge could shed some light on this theory, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

For those of us with this problem I would suggest the following.
Take a Vitamin B supplement or find energy drinks. A Vit B complex vitamin in the morning seems to help me.
These days modern energy drinks do not rely on caffeine alone, but will include an "energy blend". While they have a decent amount of caffeine, energy drinks these days also rely on high levels of Vitamin B. In fact this is why 5 hour Energy drink works so well for some people; its 8000% of your daily Vit B intake for extra strength model. As a compound Vitamin B will increase your metabolism and blood flow and in turn will perk you up. On the back of some Vit B heavy drinks it will even state that some people will feel a face flush as the bloodflow is increased. I find these drinks when combined with other forms of Caffeine like guarana have a positive non-drowsy effect on me. Try Vitamin Water Energy (The yellow one). It has guarana and Vit B and seems to work for me.
Be warned however that Vitamin B will make you urinate as a side effect of the increased metabolism.
Just my 2 cents, give it a shot!

Oddly, someone just told me that caffeine makes people with ADD/ADHD (diagnosed or undiagnosed) sleepy. Maybe I am an undiagnosed ADHD sufferer?!?! ha, either way, caffeine makes me sleepy.

Anonymous said...

I agree 100% with what the May 3rd, 2011 anonymous person said. I'm a 34yr old night person/insomniac female with diagnosed but mild ADHD. Coffee makes me very sleepy but also ill in the stomach (too much acid?), so I don't drink it. Tea calms me. In fact, as a kid, my parents gave me cup of chinese black tea every night to help me sleep.

Energy drinks with Vitamin B give me a little pep, no matter the caffeine level. Sugar by itself doesn't do much or makes me a little drowsy, but when it's in an energy drink I get an extra boost. I like Monster the best; for some reason the blend in Rockstar makes me feel a little spacey and ill but I'm not sure why. Guarana doesn't do anything to me. So, I've been wondering if caffeine from various sources and quantities makes a difference.

A younger friend of mine who is a college student with severe ADHD was studying for finals and complaining that she never found anything (like coffee for non-ADHD people) that would keep her awake. I gave her one of my Monster drinks, and voila! She said she was able to stay awake the entire night. That confirmed it for me, since she also said her boyfriend (also with ADHD and large amounts of Ritalin) has the same experience.

Also, most alcohol makes me a bit hyper...to a point. Red wine almost always makes me fall asleep with glass in-hand, but gives me nightmares and I always wake up within an hour or so and have trouble sleeping again.

I'm curious as to whether people have found something that works for them? Coffee makes me sleep, I have ADHD and I'm starting graduate school in a dew weeks so I need something that will give me that boost and help me stay up late to study biblical Greek. Any recommendations?

I'm in the same situation as you, just finished grad school. Coffee and sugar don't help at all. I usually go with Monster low carb/no sugar, because you can get it in a 24-pack boxed package at Costco. I'm on the West Coast, not sure if you have those near you. You may find it in other stores near you including some grocery stores - Walmart? It's expensive to get energy drinks individually or in the 4-pack. I also hear that 8 hour? energy shots work for many people but I haven't tried it.

Hi In my opinion you are wrong. Let's discuss it.

NotThatCarl said...

I googled the same thing as every else above because I noticed drinking caffeine before bed (which I used to avoid because I have so much trouble getting to sleep) actually seems to be helping me sleep. I'm in my mid thirties and caffeine used to have a stimulant effect on me. I don't have much any more (I each chocolate occasionally, but rarely soda or espresso/coffee). I started a new job where I get up early, but I've always been a morning person. Actually, I just have always had trouble sleeping, so mornings aren't any worse than any other time for me. I don't have ADD, if anything I have better than normal ability to concentrate (I'm a self taught computer programmer) and I drink a ton of water while at work (probably about 20 oz every 2 to 3 hours at least, so I doubt it's dehydration.) I had an AMP energy drink for the first time a couple years ago to try to stay awake when I was really tired and I took a nap afterwards (thought it was just hype that made people think they had caffeine, didn't research it at the time). Now I think it might have just been the start of whatever changed to prevent caffeine from helping me stay awake.

Maybe I need to buy some "no doze" to take before I got to sleep to test whatever 'this' effect is? I know that stuff worked for me when I was a teenager because I used it a few times, and espresso used to make me wired when I was in my early 20's. So this must have started within the last 5 years (approx).

This happened on me too... I only tried coffee for like three or four times..and every time it put me to sleep within half an hour...and it left my eyes with really bad dark circles. One tiny exception is that, I tried a little ice coffee with milk one morning, and I kept awake for 10 hours, but late in the afternoon, I felt pain in my eyes and got really knocked out.

Caffeine definitely doesn't wake me up. Coffee will make me mildly sleepy, and I've only had energy drink and I am sure not ever doing that again! I practically dropped dead within 10 minutes :(

hey,
i also get sleepy from coffee, it's not even just drinking it. when i smell coffee i also feel drowsy, when i drink or eat anything with even a small amount of coffee in i get headaches and stomach ache aswell

for me it's not the caffeine cause anything else with caffeine in helps keep me awake- especially coke

i guess many could just be allergic

and as i said, the smell affects me too, so it cant be dehydration

my mums allergic to coconut, and the smell of that makes her react slightly. so it's probably allergies

Interestingly enough;

"Drinking normal levels of caffeinated beverages does not cause a net dehydration effect.[203] The mild diuretic effect of caffeine is offset by the large amount of water in the caffeinated beverage"

Anonymous said...

Since the conversation here is ongoing, I thought I'd add to the annecdotal data: male, 36, not ADHD, used to be a night person but recently changed over.

I didn't have this effect from coffee until recently, like in the last month or so, hence the research that led me here. I do think I'm chronically dehydrated (there are days where the cup of coffee in the morning might constitute a goodly third of my fluid intake), so during this latest coffee-induced sleepiness, after reading about the possible connection, I ran and got a tall glass of orange juice, and have been following that with sips off a bottle of water. Result? The sleepiness has gone away and I feel the familiar jittery feeling; no way I could nap like I felt like doing twenty minutes ago.

Not sure what to think now. Maybe there are several different factors that can lead to the effect. Maybe hydrating helped. Maybe, like the one guy said, it was the vitamin c from the oj. Just hoping this information helps someone, and that more theories (or better yet, some actual answers) come up, cause I'm curious myself.

I too am a part of the caffeine conspiracy. I take vitamins every day but the 5hour energy drinks knock me out. Actually, as a non-funny story, caffeine- and falling asleep because of it- got me fired once! Sugar doesn't help at all, chewing gum, drinking cold water- none of it really helps. Usually though, if I get two hours of sleep I'm okay for another four to eight. I feel tired often and I really need something to keep me perked for the day. I tend to get six to eight hours of sleep a day, but I'm always tired. I keep a normal routine- in bed by nine, up at five, but I'm so much more awake if I'm up till two and up at five. I really don't get it! For stats- I am a seventeen year old female

Anonymous said...

I wonder if this has something to do with the ideas presented in this article. I've yet to find a satisfactory article or explanation, but I'm grateful for this blog & comments.

I'm 27, have drowsiness that increases directly with how much caffeine is ingested, though sugar will counteract the effect temporarily. When drinking non-caffeinated sugary beverages, I also don't seem to experience a "crash" just a drop back to normal. Alcohol has the usual effect on me, though I am a lightweight.

It seems like many get buzzed after the first cup, but later cups can result fatigue. But what if even the first cup makes you tired or you consume caffiene rarely? This was my case. Well, I discovered I had ADHD and this reaction to caffeine is normal. In fact, my doctor recommended drinking green tea to help me go to bed. It seems many adults have ADHD, up to 6% of the adult population! 80–90% of cases are undiagnosed! This leads me to think that ADHD could be one of the leading causes of sleepiness from caffeine. Tell me what y’all think.

If Caffeine makes you tired or feel relaxed rather than wired and if you don't have a caffeine dependence. I'd highly recommend being tested for adhd. If you told a psychiatrist or a good family doctor these symptoms, he or she would consider ADHD as a possible diagnosis.

I get sleepy after drinking coffee, seriously 'eyes crossed' struggling to stay awake sleepy. It does not happen with Coke or strong tea and not all the time with coffee, usually when I drink it mid to late afternoon.

The 'dehydration' theory is , I am afraid, a myth. The amount of water drunk with the coffee vastly outweighs the diuretic effect even if you drink strong expresso.

Some people have this problem because they have ADHD and this is a proven effect, but I am sure I do not have ADHD. There is definitely some other process happening for many of us here.

Found this (posted on the internet by a nurse) because I have the same problem with caffeine making me more tired:

You will find that you need less coffee to give you more energy.

Anonymous said...

Yea, educated minds keep saying it's due to dehydration, but that just doesn't make sense in my case, because I drink lots of water and tea every day and lots of the tea is herbal (no caffeine) but when I do have caffeinated teas, I get drowsier than the herbal teas!! But if I drink strong coffee during the day or have an energy pill, I do get that stimulant effect. However I can make coffee with milk and sugar at night and it makes me drowsy. Or I'll have earl grey tea and it makes me drowsy. I've also thought that maybe it was due to my own mind. See, during my childhood, my grandmother used to make earl grey tea with milk and sugar for me every night. It reminds me very much of her and has a soothing effect on my soul, which is perhaps why (I think) it may make me drowsy. Otherwise, other caffeinated teas and things do that to me as well, and some stimulate... so I'm completely unaware of what it actually is, and I did appreciate the dehydration comment, even though I don't think it's what it is, in my case.
